February 2010

Dear Leary Family,

This fall, we began our district-wide initiative called PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports). Here at Leary, we encourage students to “Show their Leary Pride” every day!  As I shared with you in our September newsletter and at our September PTA meeting, our common district expectations are framed around the ideas of being respectful, responsible, ready to learn, caring, and trustworthy. These traits are expected in all areas of our school, including our lunchroom, classrooms, bathrooms, library, bus, and hallways. We successfully inform, support, and reinforce our students with these expectations, in the following ways:

Teaching expectations-We kicked off our year by celebrating our students and teaching our expectations for all areas of our school. We continue to explicitly teach our expectations around being respectful, responsible, ready to learn, caring, and trustworthy each day.  This teaching is conducted in school-wide assemblies, in classrooms, by staff and students modeling expected behaviors, and through our morning announcements.

Using data to track progress-Throughout the year, we review behavioral data that tells us how well our students are meeting behavioral expectations. We do this in stakeholder teams such as our PBIS team, Shared Decision Making, and the Leary Building Advisory Committee. These conversations help us determine where celebrations for behavior should occur as well as identifying areas in need of re-teaching and clarification. Re-teaching can be targeted to the whole school, grade levels, classrooms, or individuals.

Reinforcing traits, involving students in the process-Each month, our entire school focuses on teaching and reinforcing one of our five traits to learn about in school. The identified trait is taught throughout the school and is celebrated in our monthly Leary Pride Assembly.

Recognizing students for making great choices- We take opportunities both school-wide and in classrooms at the end of each month to celebrate success of students. The most important recognition children receive is the on-the-spot praise they receive from teachers and classmates around them.  Sometimes individual students, classes, or buses earn stickers as a reward for demonstrating specific behaviors related to the Leary Pride Matrix.  Verbal praise and stickers are the most common reinforcers for our students.

Occasionally, Leary staff recognize students for demonstrating their Leary Pride by writing them a post card acknowledging the specific action the student took that demonstrated responsibility, respect, readiness to learn, caring, or trustworthiness.  Every student can earn recognition through a Leary Pride postcard, receiving a pencil, and having their name announced during our morning announcements.

We recognize the importance of acknowledging good behavior by groups of students, too!

In the cafeteria, classes can earn the coveted “Golden Tray” for showing their Leary Pride through their actions.  Leary Pride can also be demonstrated on the bus, and our bus drivers are recognizing good bus behaviors with stickers.  The morning and afternoon buses with the most stickers are recognized each month.  Bus and cafeteria awards are given at either the monthly Leary Pride Assembly or over the announcements, and are always greeted by a cheer!  We want to publicly celebrate students for making great choices and show them how proud we are of them!

More information about PBIS can be found on our school webpage, by clicking on the Leary Pride link.  You can view photos of the students recognized each month, see our “Pride Presentations,”our Leary Pride Song, and find other information about PBIS at Leary Elementary.  There is a “Leary Pride Matrix for Home” available on this page that you can customize with your child to reinforce behavioral expectations at home.  Did you know that there is a District Video on PBIS available on the district webpage?  This provides important information about how important PBIS is in all of our Rush-Henrietta schools.  Watch it at www.rhnet.org/pbisvideo.

Thank you for your support of our behavioral expectations, both at school and at home. It has been a pleasure to work with families, students, and staff on Leary Pride, and I hope you will agree that it has made Leary an even better place to be!

As always, should you have any questions or if I can be of assistance, please contact me at 359-5460 or jtomalty@rhnet.org.  You are an important part of our school community, and I thank you for your continued support and assistance!

Warmly,

Jennifer Tomalty, Principal
